在动物世界中，有很多动物都有臭腺体，可以喷射一种极为恶臭的液体，让猎食者不敢靠近，其中臭鼬这招臭气臭屁反击是非常明显的。曾有摄影师抓拍到：一只狐狸本想捕捉一只臭鼬，而狐狸也占据压倒性优势，但被臭鼬一个臭屁击中，立即表现出一副臭不可闻，极度难闻的样子。
狐狸对战臭鼬，不论是体型、速度，还是狩猎技巧，狐狸都占据上风，加上狐狸又是一种非常聪明狡猾的动物，狐狸面对体型更小的臭鼬，也是一副志在必得的样子，完全低估了臭鼬的必杀技。
在美洲的食物链中，连美洲豹、美洲狮、美洲野猫等等顶级猫科，都会避开臭鼬，都不会贸然攻击臭鼬，是因为臭鼬有超强的防御武器——臭腺，臭鼬在尾巴旁有两个大的臭腺，产生特殊的气味，会向敌人喷一种恶臭的液体，这种“化学武器”除了臭，还会让敌人窒息，并能引起暂时性失明，从而让臭鼬获得逃跑机会。
臭鼬连美洲豹都不畏惧，会怕一只狐狸？很快狐狸就中了臭鼬一招，狐狸立即停止攻击，不敢再贸然靠近。臭鼬喷射恶臭的液体，在3.5米距离内，是百发百中的，所以聪明的狩猎者，除非是在非常饥饿时，才敢不要命的袭击捕食臭鼬。
狐狸这次想捕食臭鼬，却低估臭鼬的反击，被臭屁击中，表现出一副臭不可闻的样子！也许下次都不敢轻易捕食臭鼬了，而臭鼬的臭屁有多臭？其强烈的臭味在大约800米的范围内都可以闻到，一般猛兽都不愿轻易靠近。
臭鼬的臭气那么大，在大自然中就没有天敌了？但在美洲偏偏就有臭鼬的天敌，有人曾在一只美洲雕鸮的巢里发现了57只臭鼬，可见臭鼬的臭气对美洲雕鸮没有一点作用，是因为美洲雕鸮是没有嗅觉的，根本就不怕臭，臭鼬的“化学武器”哪能起作用！
